TESTING WHAT WE HEAR

EIGHT QUESTIONS FOR TESTING
WHAT PEOPLE SENSE THEY'RE HEARING FROM THE SPIRIT

1. Are you fully surrendered to the Holy Spirit, as best you know?
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. – Ephesians 4:30

2. Is what you’re sensing based on / supported by Scripture?
... Knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.  – 2 Peter 1:20-21

3. Will what you’re sensing bring glory to Jesus, or yourself / others?
The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood.  – John 7:18

4. Is what you’re sensing for now or later?
But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone; nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.
– Galatians 1:15-17

5. Is what you’re sensing for you or for the entire group / church?
But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and who called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately consult with anyone; nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.
– Galatians 1:15-17

6. Will what you’re sensing lead to worship & mutual edification in the church?
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. – Ephesians 4:29

7. Will what you’re sensing promote / produce the fruit of the Holy Spirit?
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. – Galatians 5:22-26

8. Will what you’re sensing lead to unity of the church?
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
– Ephesians 4:1-3
