FAILING IN PUBLIC: A CHURCH PLANTING SUCCESS STORY

FIVE LESSONS I LEARNED FROM "SUCCESS" - JUSTIN ANDERSON

  1. Don’t lose your humanity - in growth or chasing it.
    1. You aren’t a super human - you have needs and fears and limitations.
    2. “Lead out of your weakness” - It means to be honest about those things and actively rely on God and others to be strong for you.
  2. Don’t get distracted from the mission - in growth or chasing it.
    1. Remember why you started doing this in the first place.
    2. God, Gospel, People, Transformation.
    3. Don’t duplicate other successful ministry to try to duplicate their success.
      1. Because you aren’t them - as good or talented in the same ways (Chandler, “I’m just good at this”).
      2. Because it’s not what God asked you to do in the first place.
  3. God’s given you exactly what he wants you to have today - in growth or not.
    1. If you want more/different pray for it.
    2. When it’s frustrating, ask what God is trying to show you/teach you.
      1. He cares as much or more about your soul as he does about your church.
    3. Don’t believe the lie that if you only had *this* much more, you’d really start to move.
  4. Growth/Size is just OK - it doesn’t end and it doesn’t fill your heart.
    1. More work, more time.
    2. Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems - Biggie.
    3. But that thirst never stops.
  5. “Growth” often isn’t Growth and “Failure” is rarely Failure.
    1. Attendance growth is great but don’t confuse it with actual spiritual growth or maturity or discipleship.
    2. Failure is only failure if you buy the world’s rubric.
      1. If you pray and listen and try something and it doesn’t work, what failed exactly?
